MUSIC Database Development
The study database will be implemented using MuSIC (Multi-Schema Information Capture), a database access software toolkit developed and managed at UVA. MuSIC supports secure capture and storage of data for clinical research at UVA. To create a MuSIC database, a developer designs a custom multi-table relational database schema in MySQL (www.mysql.com) and uses the MuSIC toolkit to rapidly create, from the schema, a Web-based front end for the database. This custom Web site includes standard project administration screens and a set of initial data entry and reporting forms that can be modified through the Web by project staff to create a data-entry and reporting interface tailored to the project. Music databases are implemented on standalone servers designated for MuSIC systems. Server is housed securely in association with the UVA Clinical Data Repository (CDR) in the UVA main data center, which provides HIPAA-compliant access management and industry best practices in system administration, backup, and disaster recovery. MuSIC supports secure data entry via encrypted Web forms, batch upload of spreadsheets and delimited text files, and download of data as spreadsheets, delimited text files, and SQLite databases. Data fields may be tagged as "PHI," allowing automatic de-identification of data sets at download. User databases containing PHI data is restricted to the UVA Health System secure network or external users via VPN with two-factor authentication. Other eCRF systems are also available at UVA.
