EMERSE (Electronic Medical Record Search Engine) is an open-source tool created by the University of Michigan. EMERSE helps researchers accurately find and extract important patient details like diagnoses, medications, procedures, and complications from clinical notes. EMERSE is easy for non-technical people to use and enables health research that was previously inefficient or nearly impossible.

EMERSE is similar to natural language processing (NLP), but it's actually an information retrieval tool. That means it has a lot of similarities with software users are already familiar with including Google. Another advantage of EMERSE over traditional NLP is how simple it is to use, and how little effort is required to get started with it.

Due to the possibility of identifiers in patient notes, only staff that is covered under the UVA HIPAA covered entity can use this tool. At this time EMERSE is free to use after access approval. If you would like the EMERSE team to conduct clinical notes research on your behalf then that is possible through a fee for service model. Please contact the EMERSE group for a consultation and cost estimate at researchdata@uvahealth.org.
