Team Science: Authorship Agreement Tool

Authorship Agreement

Who should receive authorship credit on the manuscript and in what order should they be listed? What is the target journal? And what roles and responsibilities will each author take?

Collaborating on these decisions is a critical aspect of doing science responsibly. These are decisions that should be made early, documented clearly, and revisited periodically to prevent misunderstandings and ensure a productive and satisfying collaboration.

Authorship Criteria

Authorship norms vary across fields and disciplines. Authors included on this manuscript should satisfy the criteria for authorship recommended by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE):

  1. Substantial contributions to the conception or design of the work; or the acquisition, analysis, or interpretation of data for the work; AND
  2. Drafting the work or revising it critically for important intellectual content; AND
  3. Final approval of the version to be published; AND
  4. Agreement to be accountable for all aspects of the work in ensuring that questions related to the accuracy or integrity of any part of the work are appropriately investigated and resolved.

This online tool is open for public use and provides a mechanism to plan out a full manuscript submission.
