VA_K-TUTOR
VA_K-TUTOR is a NIH-funded grant awarded in 2020, with first round of trainees going through the program in 2021-2022.
Through this unique two-phase program we prepare students to be the next generation of kidney scientists, to make innovative discoveries, and to do so through a creative, team-based integrative structure.
The program has two phases, first a 10 week summer program held at UVA to include didactics on kidney diseases, clinical experiences, and lab research. The goal for trainees is to find a clinical problem to solve during the Academic Program phase conducted during the academic year.
The second phase takes place during the school year, and is focused research on solving a clinical problem, identified in Phase 1, in one of four technical areas:
- Infectious disease mitigation and Human Factors Engineering
- Biomedical Engineering
- Nanotechnology and Biomaterials
- Data Sciences
This program is lead by three Primary Investigators: Mark D. Okusa, M.D., Rahul Sharma, PhD., and William H. Guilford, PhD..
