Epic Research Billing
Research billing is very different than other health system billing workflows. Research teams will need to closely manage orders and encounters and perform billing reviews to ensure that visits and events that are tied to a research study are billed either to the patient/insurance or to charged to the research study account (PTAO) as described by the study billing coverage analysis and consent form. The attached tip sheet describes the research billing review process for Epic encounters. Please note that special care should be taken with federally funded projects that provide support for an investigator who also provides care for study patients and thus could potentially generate professional charges related to an encounter. The second attachment describes who to avoid double-bililng a grant for investigator effort.
