Clinical Research in the Medical Center

UVA's Patient Care Committee has developed a guidance describing best practices and the responsibilities of clinical staff and research staff when research is conducted in the UVA Medical Center. This includes human subject research projects approved by the IRB of Heatlh Sciences Research and the IRB of Social Behavioral Sciences Research whenever the research involves patient interactions in inpatient, diagnostic/ interventional, or ambulatory settings. Please open the guideline attached on this page for futher details. It is important to review this guidance during the start-up phase and at the time of any protocol modifications in order to ensure effective communication between research and clinical staff. The PNSO Nursing Research Lead can serve as a liaison between research teams and patient care teams if questions or concerns arise (email PNSO@virginia.edu). For further information, please review PNSO Research Office website.
