Protection of Human Subjects and "The Common Rule"
This website provides the federal Health and Human Services regulations regarding the protection of human subjects. These federal regulations apply to all research involving human subjects at our institutions. HHS has defined "research" as a systematic investigation, including research development, testing and evaluation, designed to develop or contribute to generalizable knowledge. A review by an IRB (Insitutional Review Board) will help ensure your research plan aligns with current regulations. Subpart A of 45 CRF 46 is called "The Common Rule" and is the most broadly referenced section of these regulations (codified by 15 other federal departments and agencies). Please note that the Common Rule was recently amended and changes will go into effect on January 19, 2019.
