UVA PHI: A Research-Practice-Partnership to Identify Community-Led Solutions for Youth Suicide Prevention and Research
Suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STB) are increasing at alarming rates among youth, particularly Black and Latine youth, and existing resources and treatment options for Black/Latine youth with STB are often insufficient and ineffective. This qualitative study led by University of Virginia (UVA) researchers and Region Ten, a community organization that serves youth with STB, aims to: 1) identify specific supports and resources the local community – including youth, caregivers, mental health care providers, and school staff – need to better support Black/Latine youth with STB, and 2) partner with Black/Latine youth who have experienced STB to co-design a research protocol that uses digital technology to improve suicide risk monitoring. Findings from this study will inform the UVA-Region Ten team’s longer-term efforts to develop tailored resources and interventions for Black/Latine youth with STB, as well as future studies to test the research protocol designed with youth.
