Evaluating Equity in COVID-19 Care: an analysis of EHR data from N3C and UVA
The purpose of this study is to answer these questions using UVA health record data and several public datasets: In a cohort of COVID+ individuals, is there health equity in hospitalization after an emergency department (ED) visit and, once hospitalized, in receiving treatment across race/ethnicity and social determinants of health (SDoH), after controlling for age, sex, and comorbidities? Are results different when we focus on vulnerable populations such as patients with documented housing instability? Do we observe the same patterns in the UVA patient population at large that we see in the COVID-19 positive population? How does our analysis change when we mine text from notes data for comborbidities? In addition to asking these questions of patient care in the ED, we will also evaluate equity in treatment allocation COVID-19+ patients who were admitted from the ED. Treatments will include drugs (such as Remdesivir) and procedures (such as ECMO).
