iPRIME: Effect of exercise training in women with breast cancer on immune cell senescence with the aim of developing a novel immunosenescent signature.

Breast cancer affects 1 out of 8 women and is associated with good long-term survival outcomes (90% 5-year survival) but, survivors are at an elevated risk for cardiovascular disease which may be related to cancer treatments. Exercise maintains cardiovascular function and cardiorespiratory fitness (VO2peak) when coupled with breast cancer treatments. Whether the benefits of exercise are related to favorable modifications to immune function is unknown. This grant will examine the effects of exercise training in women with breast cancer on immune cell senescence and compare it with non-exercising patients with breast cancer as well as women without cancer. Further, we will examine the relationships between these markers and change in clinical parameters such as left ventricular systolic/diastolic function, VO2peak and markers of inflammation. Finally, we will explore the development of a novel immunosenescence signature which will then be tested prospectively in a future cohort of women with breast cancer.
