UVA PHI: The Effects of Vitamin C on Exercise-Induced Oxidative Stress in Postmenopausal Females
This study explores whether vitamin C can improve blood vessel function and reduce oxidative stress in women after menopause. After menopause, the loss of estrogen can increase oxidative stress and make blood vessels less able to expand and contract properly, raising the risk for cardiovascular disease. This project tests whether taking different doses of vitamin C for a few days can enhance how the body responds to exercise — a common form of physical stress that challenges the cardiovascular system.
To better understand how these responses may differ by sex, the study will also include a comparison group of men. By studying both women and men, Derella hopes to learn how biological sex influences the body’s response to vitamin C and exercise. This research could help identify simple, non-hormonal strategies to support heart and vascular health in women as they age.
